Bivalves from the West Region of Portugal: development of sustainable farming

ABSTRACT/AIM
bivalves oeste_p The bivalve’s production is considered a clean aquaculture. This production has been used in several lakes and coastal areas with the aim of improving the water quality since they filter the water removing the phytoplankton and organic detritus in suspension, reducing the existing organic matter. The main objective of this project is to maintain clams, mussels and oysters to obtain spawning and achieved the juveniles’ development in order to rear it in based-land culture or in suspension systems. We intend to achieve gonad maturation in captivity and induce viable spawning. Since there are no bivalve’s hatcheries in Portugal, we intend to develop the technology that allows us to become wild catch´s independents. The development of this technology will enable the transfer of knowledge to businesses and provide access to seeds to small farmers.
