Be4AQUAHEALTH – National survey of aquaculture fish diseases: a bet on prevention

Abstract/Aim
Conduct longitudinal study to know the main pathogens (bacteria, parasites and virus) throughout the life cycle of fish species grown in Portugal and study their prevalence. To study hematological and immunological markers evaluating their variation and relation with the life cycle phase and health status of the fish, as well as with the type of culture. Identify standards that allow stipulating when preventive measures should start. Develop cell lines of the species under study for further work in vitro. Know the pathogen/host interactions in the most commonly produced species in Portuguese aquacultures and in relation to the main pathogens that affect them. Develop a good practice manual, implement biosecurity measures and establish preventive measures to increase fish health and reduce the use of veterinary medicines.
