MACAU – Macroalgalda Diversity Natural Reserve of Berlengas and Adjacent Coast, from Knowledge to Use

Abstract/Aim
The operation will be based on an exhaustive survey of the macroalgae communities present in the intertidal and subtidal rocky substrate of Berlenga and Farilhões, as well as the rocky beaches of the nearest adjacent coast, 30 km north (S. Martinho do Porto, Alcobaça) and south (Gambelas, Torres Vedras). The survey will be done by elements of the project team, logistically supported by a local company specialized in diving and underwater activities. The collected biological material will be photographed, identified and catalogued, and with it a reference collection and a digital archive, to be deposited at CETEMARES (MARE- Polytechnic of Leiria), will be created. The reference collection will serve, immediately, to assess the biodiversity of the Marine Protected Area (MPA) of the Berlengas Marine Reserve (BMR), a basis work of the highest importance in view of, for example, the risk that climate change brings to aquatic ecosystems.
