OURICEIRA AQUA – Aquaculture and finishing of sea urchin gonads
Abstract/ Aim
Sea urchin is increasingly appreciated in world gastronomy and can be a candidate for diversification and sustainable development of aquaculture. There are several diets with potential to finish gonads (roe) of sea urchins in captivity, i.e. to improve the quality of the gonads for human consumption (enhancement). The aim of this project is to evaluate, from the biological point of view, the viability of the rearing of sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus. The main goals are: induction of the broodstock maturation in indoor systems in order to obtain viable eggs and larvae; evaluate diets and production systems for larvae and juveniles, studying their survival and growth in aquaculture and evaluating new diets for the enhancement of sea urchin gonads.
