Algavalue – Adding value to by-products obtained during the biotechnological production of squalene and DHA by the microalgae Aurantiochytrium sp.

Abstract/Aim
The Algavalue project intends to optimize the biotechnological process of squalene production, of high interest given its antioxidative and anticarcinogenic properties, from heterotrophic microalgae that, in certain growth conditions, besides producing significant amounts of squalene, may potentially produce other compounds of high value and commercial interest such as docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), carotenoids, and others. In addition, the project intends to develop strategies of by-products valuation by a biorefinery approach to this resource, promoting environmentally sustainable practices and adding commercial value to this activity.
