AMALIA – Algae-to-MArket Lab IdeAs – Adding value to invasive seaweeds of the Iberian northwest
Invasive seaweeds cause considerable ecological and economic problems. These threats can, however, be seen as opportunities, considering their diverse content in compounds with industrial application potential. While contributing to the economy, the exploitation of these algae can also contribute to its ecological control, thus improving oceans’ quality. This project aims to develop underwater advanced imaging systems to monitor seaweeds, enabling real-time information for the industry, and at the same time, adding biotechnological value to these seaweeds, by enhancing their use for innovative food and feed products, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals.
