COSMOS – Biotechnological valorization of the invasive seaweed Asparagopsis armata off the coast of Peniche
The main mission of the project COSMOS is the identification and characterisation of bioactive compounds from the invasive seaweed Asparagopsis armata, located at Peniche coast and Natural Reserve of Berlengas. Ultimately, the formulation of a strategic line of cosmetic products containing compounds with relevant bioactivities with marine origin (as antioxidants and photoprotectors) will highlight all the operation and will demonstrate the potential of the project to generate a blue economic growth. This way, the valorization of an unexplored resource will contribute to a sustainable economy of the region that besides the added value of an invasive macroalgae with economic and ecologic impacts in the west zone ecosystems, their exploration will contribute to the restoration of the native macroalgae and animal communities by eliminating a considerable part of the invasive macroalgae.
