CROSS-ATLANTIC – CReating Opportunities from Seaweed Sulfated polysaccharides for Application in Therapeutics

Abstract/Aim
The CROSS-ATLANTIC project aims at extracting, isolating and purifying sulfated polysaccharides (SP) from macroalgae with anti-inflammatory, photoprotective and neuroprotective properties. This project will study macroalgae from Portugal coast and macroalgae from Ceará coast (Brazil) on in vitro and in vivo models. The sulfated polysaccharides have already shown strong bioactive properties including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and neuroprotective, suggesting that those compounds can contribute to open new opportunities for products development by the cosmetic and/ or pharmaceutical industry.
